A note from Mr. Fred Muehleman, Principal, on
Steroid Use
Dear Parents,
We are faced with many daily reminders of the use and abuse of
steroids, and other performance enhancing drugs. There is
no lack of information concerning the long and short term
negative effects of such drugs. Most everyone agrees that
steroid use is a dangerous way to "reach and exceed your
potential", and one to be avoided completely. The question
is, who will monitor their potential use by young
student-athletes? A recent Daily Herald article pointed
out that this monitoring is the rightful responsibility of
parents. Parents are the fist line of defense against any
use of legal or illegal supplements, including alcohol and
nicotine. We agree. But we here at Driscoll Catholic
can help you keep your children free of harmful drugs. We
have the following programs in place for the coming school year.
and are investigating more opportunities to communicate the ill
effects of steroid use:
-
Expanded
drug awareness sessions in both Science and Health classes
-
Professional speakers specifically for the athletic programs
-
Professional speakers for all school assemblies
-
Inter-Quest
Detection Canines-random drug/alcohol inspections
-
SADD/Spectrum programs designed to communicate the dangerous
effects of performance enhancing chemicals.
Please refer to page 28 of the Student/Parent Handbook for
specific rules concerning use and possession of ANY
nutritional supplements in school and on school property.
The possession and use of nutritional supplements and steroids
is strictly prohibited. Students who violate this policy
will be suspended pending disciplinary review and their
supplements will be permanently confiscated and disposed of .
There are many pressures on today's young people to succeed.
The use of steroids and supplements should not be included with
the normal, everyday pressures of growing up. If we work
together, we can help our children reach their potential the
"natural way".
