DC Offers A Rainbow of Activities

Academic Bowl

Academic Bowl is a scholastic team competition that tests a student’s knowledge in such categories as mathematics, science, social studies, English and other miscellaneous categories.

Amnesty International

Amnesty International is an organization that strongly believes in human rights, and that no one should be discriminated against or violated because of race, gender, religion, ethnicity, disability, or having strong beliefs for a particular cause. Amnesty International meets twice a month, to write letters to different parts of the world, including the U.S., to defend people who are not being treated right or are being violated in some way, shape, or form. These letters that we write are called Urgent Actions. Amnesty International also hosts two movie/pizza nights a year to watch movies pertaining to Amnesty topics. Last year we wrote and sent Christmas cards to political prisoners.

Campus Ministry

Campus Ministry is an extracurricular activity that is open for everyone to join. We work together for a variety of outreach mission projects throughout the entire school year. Some of the projects are: San Miguel school supply drive, Humanitarian Service Project Food Drive and Christmas Gift-Giving Tree, VietNow Clothes Drive and Homeless Food Prep Days, Baby Goods Drive, Lutheran General Toy Shopping Trip, Leukemia Foundation’s Pennies for Pasta, and Muscular Dystrophy Foundation. We also hold a number of Blizzard Days at school lunches throughout the year to raise funds for our Twin School program in Africa. Some students also become involved in the school liturgies as Eucharistic Ministers. All are welcome to become involved either all year or when a project is announced that appeals to their interests.

Computer Club

The computer club is open to all students with an interest in computers, whether using them as tools or understanding how they work. The club performs various activities during the year, designed to meet the interests of the students involved with the club. Activities range from playing interactive games to building networks and computers.  We are always interested in new members who want to share their expertise, or who would like to learn from ours. We usually meet on Fridays at 3:00, with a different activity scheduled for each meeting.

Driscoll Diplomats

The Driscoll Diplomats club is a public relation/service organization whose student members are chosen by the faculty and staff. This talented group of students serves as part of an ongoing public relations program designed to help prospective students and their parents learn more about the Driscoll Catholic Community. These students focus their efforts on events and activities such as shadow days, Open Houses, the Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast, and elementary school recruitment visits.

Lasallian Youth

Lasallian Youth is the youth group here at Driscoll Catholic High School. We form a faith-filled community which shows its love for God through community service of those in need. Once a month, we join the other Christian Brother's school's Lasallian Youth groups and have a large school gathering. When we meet, there are community building activities, a service project, and a prayer service. Some of the service activities we've done are: organizing clothes at the St. Vincent DePaul store, cleaning a community playlot on the south side of Chicago, tutoring students at San Miguel School, and making crafts for Marklund Children's Home. Many students will come to Lasallian Youth in order to fulfill service hours. These same students choose to return because they enjoy the experiences that they've encountered. Everyone is welcome. As one alumnae stated, "Lasallian Youth, the revolving door membership." We ask that you come with an open mind and be willing to participate in all that we have to offer.

Newspaper - DC Pride

Students who want to participate in the school newspaper as an extracurricular can sign up to work in a number of capacities: as a reporter (to write stories for each issue), as a photographer (to take pictures; does require use of student's own camera); as folder and/or distributor. Students who want to participate as a reporter or photographer should either come to staff meetings (during homeroom; look for announcements) or stop in to see Mr. Stuart in Room 103. The first issue comes out in September. To see your name and work in print, sign up now!

Poetry Club

Student writers meet to read and examine professional authors' poetry and writing and to share their own to receive encouragement and criticism. The first half of Poetry Club meetings is devoted to the presentation of a published author/songwriter (often, music is played/listened to), and students comment on the different writing styles. The second half of the meeting is devoted to reading and listening to students' own original works and responding in ways that are helpful to young writers' working to develop their skills. Often, a writing exercise is included within the meeting so that even if students have not brought some original work with them to the meeting, everyone can produce a short poem and have an opportunity to share.

SADD

The mission of Driscoll Catholic's SADD chapter is to be a teen empowering organization dedicated to preventing underage drinking and other drug use by focusing attention on the potentially life-threatening consequences of destructive decisions involving issues such as not wearing a safety belt, smoking, steroid use, violence, sexually transmitted diseases and suicide. The chapter plans many activities throughout the year to keep Driscoll students aware of their choices. The organization meets the third Tuesday of every month after school and on Activity Days.

Science Club

Science Club is an academic, co-curricular activity open to all students. The club's main goal is to promote interest in, understanding of, and excitement for learning more about scientific ideas, discoveries, and issues facing us today.  Meetings will be held before school. Field trips are also an important part of the Science Club experience. Last year, for example, we visited a wetland learning about its ecology as well as raptors. Another trip was to the Cernan Space Center at Triton College, River Grove, for a presentation entitled "The Hubble and Beyond." The choice of topics and trips depends on student input. A recycling project and other Earth Day activities were also held. The club has about 30 members who are led by 4 officers and moderated by Mrs. Galligan.

Spanish Club

Spanish Club meets once a month, on Activity Day for approximately 45 minutes. The club has a group of officers who are in charge of organizing and preparing the meetings and the activities conducted at these meetings. There is a president, a vice-president, a secretary, a treasurer and a social coordinator, who work together with the club moderator in the planning and hosting of the meetings.

There is usually a monthly theme and food is offered based on the theme. The group will either watch a movie (in Spanish or about Hispanic Culture) or have an activity/game conducted in sub-groups.

Student Council

Executive officers are elected at the end of each school year to serve a one year term of office for the following year. The president and vice-president must be seniors while the secretary and treasurer may be seniors or juniors.

Homeroom representatives are selected on a volunteer basis from each homeroom at the beginning of the new school year. Before volunteering, the student is made aware of the representative’s duties and responsibilities. If he or she is unable to fulfill these duties and responsibilities, the student should not volunteer to be a homeroom representative.

Duties and Responsibilities of a Homeroom Representative:

Must attend all Student Council meetings.  An announcement will be made in advance as to which day the meeting will be held.

You must participate in all Student Council functions. This includes, but is not limited to, pep rallies, Spirit Week activities, decorations and clean-up for the Homecoming Dance, Christmas/Valentine's Day flower sales and distribution and a service project.

As a homeroom representative, you are also a class officer responsible to the faculty class moderator and class functions.

Representatives must report Student Council information to their homerooms.

If for any reason a homeroom representative cannot perform his or her duties as described, another student will be appointed to take the representative’s place.

Yearbook

The yearbook staff works very long and hard throughout the year, concerning every aspect of producing the yearly "Highlander Yearbook."

The staff is composed of editors and staff members who work on copy, layout, photography and art. They meet weekly in Room 209, in the Art Room. All students are welcome.
