COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The objective of this class is to study a select few of the many factors influencing music in today’s world through the use of the computer and other available resources. This class is open to anyone, as it intends to entice both the general student and the curious musician. It will take in depth look at practical music theory, music business concepts, musical notation software/MIDI sequencing, music studio production, and will also include factors of music history/appreciation.

SUPPLIES:
-Students will be required to bring a pencil, eraser, and plenty of paper to class each day. -They must also purchase a three ring binder (small black AVERY brand is recommended). The binder will be used to collect and complete handout packets.

GRADES:
*Student grades will be based on:
-Attitude/participation
-Homework assignments
-Tests/quizzes (planned or unannounced/written or by means of the computer).
-Projects/Presentations
-Final Exam (worth one fifth of the student’s semester grade)

CLASS RULES:
My approach as your instructor in this class is to treat you as mature young adults. I expect nothing less from you than active cooperation, participation, and attention at all times. Any disrespectful behavior towards myself or another one of your classmates WILL NOT be tolerated. Punishment will be dealt with on an individual basis as circumstance provides.

Music Technology & Appreciation Course Breakdown
The following is a breakdown of the main topics students will cover during the span of this course. Lesson plans and assignments may change from day to day, but here is a basic outline of the course material being presented.

1. Music Theory Concepts:
-Students will begin to learn basic music theory concepts such as pitch, rhythm, intervals, scales, and key signatures. The student will utilize CAI (Computer Assisted Instructional) software to reinforce their understanding of the concepts being presented in class lectures.

2. Music History & Appreciation:
-Students will learn about different musical composers and instruments throughout history. They will listen to music, perform music in small groups, and watch videos to further enhance their understanding and appreciation of music literature & performance.

3. Musical Notation Software and MIDI Sequencing:
-Students will learn about and utilize different software programs to create their own original compositions.

4. Music Business Concepts:
-Students will gain a basic understanding of music publishing, copyright law, trademark registration, & different careers in the music industry.

5. Music Studio Production/Audio Engineering:
-Students will learn about microphones, mixers, and sound/studio applications.

-Handouts, worksheets, written assignments, quizzes, and tests will be given to the student in all areas to evaluate and reinforce their knowledge base.

 

*Additional Exit Requirements:
-Each student must assist the music department with a listed calendar event either by performing with an ensemble or helping with tech crew (staging/sound/lights, etc.)
Forms are available from the instructor and will be signed upon completion of this task.

-Each student will also be required to attend the music department’s annual Christmas or Spring concert.
